How to Search Benzie Civil Dockets
MiCOURT Case Search is Benzie County’s public, free case-history path for participating civil matters. It does not replace the official file. Start with Name Search when only a party or business name is known. Last Name or Business is required, and first name, middle name, or birth year may narrow a result when the portal presents those fields. The observed public search requires at least two characters and does not allow a wildcard.
Case Number Search is better when an order, notice, or prior result supplies the exact identifier. Select the correct court before searching, then use the Civil category and any useful filed-date or status filters. MiCOURT can return a case title, filing date, status, judge, next hearing, balance, disposition, and closure fields. The available fields vary by case and public status, so confirm the court before relying on a time-sensitive or document-specific result.
- Open MiCOURT, accept the terms, and choose the court that owns the civil matter.
- Use a party or business name, or enter the exact case number if it is known.
- Narrow the results with a civil category, status, or filing-date filter when needed.
- Open case detail and read the parties, event history, next hearing, orders, and disposition fields.
- Ask the responsible clerk for the actual public document, a certified copy, or help locating an older file.
Benzie Civil Dockets by Court
The published $25,000 line is the main civil routing rule in Benzie County. The 19th Judicial Circuit Court carries civil matters above that amount as well as equity, family-division, and authorized appellate matters. The 85th District Court carries civil matters at or below the limit and small claims. Probate is separate, even when a reader loosely describes a probate matter as civil.
| Court | Benzie civil docket role |
|---|---|
| 19th Circuit | Civil matters over $25,000, equity, family division, and authorized appeals. |
| 85th District | Civil matters up to $25,000 and small claims. |
| Probate Court | Separate estate, trust, guardianship, conservatorship, and related probate proceedings. |
The table is a routing aid, not a substitute for the caption, order, or clerk’s direction in a specific case.
What a Benzie Civil Docket Shows
A Benzie civil docket is a chronological case history. Its header usually identifies the case, court, filing date, status, judge, next hearing, and possible balance or disposition information. The party block may name plaintiffs or petitioners and defendants or respondents, with attorneys and service or answer dates when public. Event history records procedural steps, not merely final decisions. Read the event sequence before treating a label as the case outcome.
| Case number | The court-assigned identifier. MiCOURT examples vary, so preserve the number exactly as shown. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Public plaintiff, petitioner, defendant, respondent, attorney, and related party information when displayed. |
| Filings and service | Opening complaint or petition, summons or citation, service, and answer entries. |
| Motions and orders | A motion asks for relief; an order records the court’s ruling or direction. |
| Judgment and status | Disposition, closure, satisfaction, or balance fields, each with a separate role in the case history. |
Benzie Civil Docket Search Fields
MiCOURT’s filters help distinguish similarly named cases. Use a party or business name for the Name Search tab, then apply status, category, and filed-date controls only if the first result set is too broad. Civil category results can include domestic and family matters. For a direct lookup, Case Number is required on the Case Number tab, while Year and Type are optional fields whose format should be copied from the case paperwork rather than invented.
| MiCOURT field | Use for Benzie civil dockets |
|---|---|
| Last Name or Business | Required name-search starting point; at least two characters. |
| First or Middle Name | Optional narrowing information. |
| Case Number | Required on the direct-lookup tab; retain the exact court-assigned format. |
| Status | Open or Pending, Adjudicated or Disposed, and Closed filters. |
| Filed Date | Optional from/to range for a broad result list. |
A common caption is a reason to use the exact case number or a narrow date range, not a reason to assume the first name match is the correct civil docket.
Civil Cases on the Benzie Docket
Benzie civil routing depends on the court and the matter. Circuit Court has the broad civil jurisdiction for higher-value claims, equity matters, appeals, administrative matters, and the family division. District Court carries civil suits within its monetary jurisdiction and small claims. Probate has its own separate register for estates, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and related statutory proceedings. A public MiCOURT civil category can include domestic and family matters, so court selection remains essential.
- Circuit civil matters above the district-court amount limit.
- District civil matters at or below the published $25,000 limit.
- Small claims as a district-court civil subset.
- Family-division matters handled through the 19th Circuit Court.
- Separate probate proceedings held by the Benzie Probate Court.
Benzie Civil Docket Event Sequence
The order of a civil docket is often more useful than a single label. Opening entries can include a complaint or petition, summons or citation, service, and answer. Later events may include a motion, notice, hearing, order, settlement, judgment, appeal, transfer, or satisfaction. The official system does not promise every event or document for every Benzie civil case, so the absence of an image is not proof that an underlying filing never occurred.
A filed motion is not a ruling. Look for a later order, disposition, or hearing result. Likewise, a judgment and satisfaction describe different things: the first can resolve a claim, while satisfaction can record later completion. A balance field is also distinct from a judgment entry. Reading these fields in date order avoids giving one item more meaning than it carries.
Benzie Civil Docket Settings and Hearings
MiCOURT case detail may show a Next Hearing with date, time, description, location, and officer fields. Read the full event history as well as that field. A notice, motion hearing, status conference, or trial event can appear before a later order or reset. The statewide Court Display can assist with date-based event checking, but it is not a complete case register and cannot prove that a setting remains unchanged.
A continuance or reset may create a later entry while the earlier setting remains visible. Use the newest signed order or current Next Hearing, then call the court if dates conflict. The Benzie County court calendar explains the public calendar paths and confirmation steps for a scheduled appearance.
Benzie Civil Dockets at the Clerk
The Benzie County Clerk is Clerk of the Circuit Court and maintains the circuit civil file. The office is at 448 Court Place, Suite 200, Beulah, and its number is (231) 882-9671 ext. 2. For district civil matters, use the 85th District Court at (231) 882-0019. The Circuit administrator line is listed as (231) 723-6664. Those contacts can confirm the proper custodian, current setting, and permitted request method.
The Benzie-linked 19th Circuit MiCOURT route is the online circuit starting point shown below.
Use the route to locate public case history, then use the circuit clerk when the request concerns the official civil file or a certified record.
Benzie Public Access to Civil Dockets
MCR 8.119 is the starting rule for a public Michigan court record. Inspection and copying are allowed unless access is restricted by law, court rule, or order. The rule does not require the court to create a new report. MiCOURT can omit protected parties, sealed material, nonpublic information, and document images. A court clerk remains the authority on whether a particular public document can be inspected or copied.
Inspection versus copies. The Michigan Court Rules state the access rule. A court cannot charge simply to access public case history or retrieve and inspect a record, but it may charge reasonable reproduction costs.
For a certified copy or exemplification, the verified statutory structure is $10 plus $1 per page under MCL 600.2546 guidance. Ask the court for Benzie’s current plain-copy, payment, delivery, and processing details.
Benzie Civil Docket Copy Choices
Free public case history and a court-certified copy serve different needs. MiCOURT can provide an online history, but it is not the official record and may not include document images. MCR 8.119 permits inspection of a public case record unless access is restricted. For a complaint, order, judgment, exhibit, or other document, identify the court, case number, document, and copy type before contacting the clerk.
The 19th Circuit Court’s official page identifies the local court and contact path shown below.
For a district civil file, start with the 85th District Court instead. Ask the responsible clerk whether inspection, copying, certification, mail, fax, email, payment method, or delivery is accepted for the particular request. A transcript is requested from the reporter, not as an ordinary clerk copy. The court-record process remains separate from county administrative-record requests.
